Pearlies - Royal Family
A London 'Cockney' dynasty of Pearlies - King, Queen, Prince and Princess - hailing from the costermongers (street traders) of London. Legend has it that in the 1880's a cargo of Japanese pearl buttons foundered in the River Thames. One of the salvagers, Henry Croft, decorated his clothes with the buttons, making him the first pearly king. A tradition that still exists to this day, and worn only on special occasions.
